ANZACPE CONFERENCE 2026

Supervision in the Wilderness

Guest Speaker – David Fleenor

TASPE is excited to host the annual ANZACPE Conference in August 2026.

We warmly invite you down south to where the air is fresh, clean and cool and where the conversations are warm, rich and engaging.

THEME – Supervision in the Wilderness

We think this is a fitting title for a conference in Tassie. CPE Supervision in the Wilderness! Both figuratively and literally as we venture out of Hobart.

What’s it like supervising in the unknown spaces and the wild spaces? What’s it like when there isn’t necessarily familiar terrain and google maps? What do we bring to the survive in the wild spaces of supervision?

We’ll explore the different environments that we supervise in and the times when they get wild.

We’ll explore the wild place that CPE is compared to other forms of Chaplaincy education – Where does CPE fit in the realms of professional Chaplaincy education and training and credentialling?

What about ANZACPE as a wild space of difference associations that each have their own ecosystems and environments?

As part of our reciprocity agreement with the ACPE, we’ll get to discuss what that could look like in Australia and New Zealand and we’ll explore the wild spaces of CPE.

We are planning to hold the Pre-Conference review committees, the board meeting and the Post Conference Education in Supervision at the RACV Hotel in Central Hobart.

We will meet together at RACV early Sunday afternoon to welcome you to the conference.

From there we’re going to journey together on a coach out of the city to our conference venue (or if you’re hiring a car/ driving – we’ll give you instructions on that Sunday!)

Yes, that means there will be some uncertainty about what lies ahead – but that’s just life in the wilderness isn’t it!

We’re planning a fabulous conference and I’m sure you’re going to be encouraged and strengthened for the work ahead!

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

David FleenorThe Rev. Dr. David W. Fleenor is an ACPE Certified Educator, board-certified chaplain, and Episcopal priest whose work focuses on the future of healthcare chaplaincy education. He serves as Director of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at ArchCare, the continuing care community of the Archdiocese of New York, where he leads accredited CPE programming across a large and complex healthcare system.

Over the course of his career, David has helped develop and strengthen CPE programs within major academic medical centers, including Mount Sinai Health System, NYU Health, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He also founded the first ACPE-accredited CPE program at Stony Brook University Hospital. In addition to his clinical leadership, he has held faculty appointments at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and currently serves as Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at the George Mercer School of Theology.

A scholar-practitioner, David completed his Ph.D. in Health Sciences at Rush University, where his research focused on transforming healthcare chaplaincy education. His work explored early-career chaplain formation, hiring manager expectations, and national consensus on professional competencies, contributing to emerging models for training healthcare chaplains.

David was also featured in the award-winning documentary A Still Small Voice, which received the U.S. Documentary Directing Award at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The film offers a rare and intimate look at CPE and helped bring international attention to the formation of chaplains and the vital role of spiritual care within contemporary healthcare.
