Pathways to becoming a CPE Supervisor Paul Hueston 2023-02-16T21:31:08+11:00

Pathways to becoming a CPE Supervisor

CPE provides an excellent opportunity to work towards roles in CPE Supervision. A Supervision pathway offers you the opportunity to take your skills and abilities further – through advanced units and into supervision of individuals and groups. Supervision is a satisfying and enriching experience of learning and growth for yourself and as you see others grow.

As the demand for CPE programmes in Tasmania is increasing, so is the need for CPE supervisors. Training more supervisors is an important step for TASPE to be able to provide a consistent and state wide CPE program.

To become a CPE Supervisor – you will need to have completed at least 3 units of CPE with one unit at an advanced level. Some participants may be eligible after 2 units (including an advanced unit) with recognition of prior knowledge, skills and learning.

To begin your pathway to Supervision training, you will:

  • complete an advanced CPE unit
  • address the national standards for entry to “Acting Level 1” or “Acting Pastoral Supervisor”
  • apply to be accepted into Supervisory training with TASPE Inc.

If successful, you can begin Supervisory training under an accredited Level 2 or 3 CPE Supervisor.

The process is thorough to ensure that our CPE Supervisors are well trained and able to provide supervision at the highest level for others who are engaging in Spiritual Care.

Levels of CPE Supervisor

There are levels of CPE supervisors – for each level you will be required to complete materials to meet the national standards and present to a review committee. You will also need to complete minimum ‘Education in Supervision’ requirements for each level.

Provisional Clinical Pastoral Supervisor (PCPS): this is where you are training (under supervision) to provide supervision to individuals within CPE Units.

Clinical Pastoral Supervisor (CPS): You are able to supervise Individuals within a unit of CPE.

Provisional Clinical Pastoral Educator (PCPE): You are under supervision to run a CPE program.

Clinical Pastoral Educator (CPE): You are able to supervise and run a CPE program – providing supervision and education in Spiritual Care.

Provisional CPE Educational Consultant (PCPEdCon): You are able to provide education in supervision to previous levels (CPS & CPE) – whilst under Supervision of a CPEdCon.

CPE Educational Consultant (CPEdCon): You are able to provide Education in Supervision to all the above CPE Supervisory Levels.

All supervisors are required to be re-accredited at their level every 5 years (unless they progress to a higher level in the meantime).

Other Supervision credentials

CPE Supervisors may be eligible to apply for membership with the Australian Association Of Supervisors (AAOS).

TASPE is currently in talks with universities and colleges within Australia in an effort to integrate our supervisory training program (and our CPE program) into other Degree and Certificate courses.
