Intent
This course will provide participants with basic skills and understanding of pastoral care theory and practice and provide participants with a short, supervised practicum to evaluate and reflect on within a group supervision process (introducing CPE process and methodology). This is a great place to begin your journey into providing pastoral care.
Outline
The Introduction to Pastoral Care & CPE Course consists of at least 40 hours including group work, theory, reading & response, engaging in the practice of pastoral care & presentation of reports of a pastoral encounter. It introduces “Pastoral Supervision”, to help you discover and build upon your own resources for pastoral ministry with people in situations of crisis and growth. The presentation of a pastoral encounter utilises an ‘Action/Reflection’ model of learning and supervision.
Objectives
- Introduce pastoral care concepts and methods such as: listening and responding, understanding expectations, questions, spiritual and emotional needs, assessing spiritual wellbeing, documenting spiritual care
- Help participants discover effective ways of interacting with patients, staff and others which are healing, sustaining, guiding, reconciling, nurturing and liberating.
- Create a learning model which gives people the opportunity to develop their professional, personal, and pastoral resources for ministry to others
- To provide a context where people can begin to work in a supervised placement.
- Provide a safe group supervision process where people can evaluate their effectiveness of their ministry. And to foster self-awareness and interpersonal sensitivity.
- Encourage participants to examine and reflect on pastoral situations in light of their theology and tradition as well as examining theological understanding in light of real-life experiences.
- Each participant will write up a verbatim which may be used in group supervision.
Practical Component
This course requires participants to engage in 5 hours of pastoral care and write a report of at least one pastoral encounter. This may be undertaken at in a current ministry position or context, Alternatively it could be undertaken in a Healthcare setting, such as hospital (RHH or Calvary) or an aged care facility or even the Tasmanian Prison Service. If you would like to undertake your placement at the RHH please let the course coordinator know as soon as possible, as there will be additional considerations.
